When we were in Las Vegas, we couldn’t resist taking a day trip to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. We tend to seek out active things, and when we read in our guidebook that it was just 20 miles west of Vegas, we hatched a plan to rent a car for a day and take in the natural beauty surrounding Las Vegas. And it did not disappoint.

We recently took a long weekend trip to Las Vegas. This would never really be our first choice for a trip since neither of us gambles and we are a little past our all-nighter days, but we were meeting family there so we decided to do it our style. Kitschy themed hotel? Check. World series of people watching? Check. Chevy Cobalt à la Cedar Rapids? Check. And we were ready to roll.
Located in Northeastern Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak of Africa coming in at 19,341 feet tall. It is one of the Seven Summits (the tallest mountains on the 7 continents) and is actually an inactive volcano. Luckily for us, it is not a technical climb (meaning leave your climbing harness and crampons at home.) The difficulty comes in the altitude gain and the strain on your bod when it is stressed by a lack of oxygen in the air. But, we didn’t really stress any of the details being 23 years old at the time and figuring that we would be just fine since we were both pretty fit at the time and are used to cold weather by virtue of our birthplace (just another reason why we heart mn).
For average peeps like us, heading to Africa is a pretty big deal so we decided that as long as we were going to be there, we should check out Zanzibar. To be exact, Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the Eastern coast of Tanzania, but in our planning we just saw it as a tropical island paradise with white sandy beaches and clear blue waters. The perfect place to relax after all that physical exertion from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
An oldie but a goodie that we can’t resist sharing. A few years ago, we were fortunate enough to take our adventures to Africa. Dain was hard at work in the design world, and I was in my third year of law school and had saved up my pennies from my summer associate position to be able to take the trip of a lifetime over winter break ’06-’07. I have always had a fascination with Africa, and I was inspired by an imax video on Kilimanjaro that I had seen in 2002. I’m a sucker for a good imax, and this one had me hook, line and sinker.
