Embracing Autumn

We are welcoming in fall a little early around here by decking out our house with some autumnal decor.  The summer was fun, but we are ready for Friday, the official first day of fall, and everything that comes with it.  Cozy sweaters, crisp air, and the changing leaves.  Last week we hit the upper 30s with a sneak peak of what we’re in for soon, and we loved it.  Supposedly it’s going to warm up again later this week, but that’s not stopping us from switching over a few little decorative touches.  Goodbye air conditioning.  Hello pumpkins.

Dain typically has to hold me back with my holiday decor, and Halloween is no exception.  Although I did read in my latest Reader’s Digest that the average adult starts getting ready for Halloween 61 days ahead of time.  Adults with kids?  Or just all adults?  I’m not sure, but I took it as license to drag out our Halloween storage container.  I was delighted to find all sorts of things that I bought last year at Target the day after Halloween when everything goes 50-75% off.  But Dain thinks it’s still too soon.  So we did not bust out all of our Halloween decor (you know….the light up motion-activated grub, bleeding skull candle, light-up glitter pumpkin, and witch that cackles on the door), but we did make a move towards autumn thanks to Home Depot’s fall display.

We stopped there last night to buy trim for our sun porch, and we grabbed a whole bag of mini pumpkins.  For $6.98, we walked away with about 15 assorted little pumpkins.  Too many?  Probably.  But we have plans for them.  The first being a little spray paint.  We sifted through our growing spray paint collection and picked out three colors we thought would be fun…gold, black, and white.

We also picked out 6 pumpkins to give the full treatment to. Dain took them out in the garage to spray them down, but we didn’t grab any pictures since it was already dark out….another sign that fall is near.  While they were drying, he made a little base for our pumpkin centerpiece to avoid the issue we seem to have every year with our little pumpkins rotting onto something before we realize it.  For this, Dain cut-out a piece of cardboard and a larger piece of black construction paper.

He glued the black paper to the cardboard wrapping it like a present.  And we were left with a nice base for our pumpkins to sit on.

After the spray paint was done, Dain obliged my taste and hit the pumpkins with a shot of the glitter spray paint.  I like to think it’s subtle and just gives them that something extra.  When they were all done drying, he brought them in, and we arranged them on the table in our living/dining room.  We also added a cheap mum that we picked up at the grocery store.

The pumpkins turned out awesome.  It’s hard to pick up on the glitter in the photos, but it does look cool, especially on the black ones.

And now we can enjoy our little fall display for weeks to come.

What about you?  Have you added any fall decor to your house or are you still clinging to summer?  We’re also probably going to add a few mums outside to keep the color lasting when all of our flowers die, and then it will be on to Halloween.
