Free trees for Earth Day? Yes please.

EarthDayTrees

We love ourselves a good deal, and what is better than a quality item for free?  That’s why we got excited reading about Earth Day freebies.  We hit Starbucks for our free Earth Day coffee on Friday, and we made it a point to head to Lowe’s on Saturday to take advantage of their “This Tree is One in a Million” Earth Day initiative to give away a million trees.

We headed out in pursuit of our free trees knowing only that they were giving out “saplings.”  We had grandiose visions of 2-3 foot trees ready to plant in our yard, which made it even funnier when we walked right by the free trees twice because they were in a box on a table.  Coming in at about 5 inches and 7 inches respectively, we nabbed ourselves two tiny white spruce saplings.  So tiny that they actually have to be kept potted inside for a year.

But we didn’t let our momentary disappointment get us down.  You get what you pay for in life, and we didn’t pay anything for our little guys.  Luckily, we found biodegradable bamboo containers at our local Ace Hardware that will allow us to display our trees in our house this year and plant them next year in our yard without having to take them out of the pots.

Our two containers ran us $2.49 each with $1.49 each for the saucers that are necessary thanks to the adequate drainage holes on the bottom of the pots. The end result is two pretty darn cute accessories that will hopefully live to see the outside world and improve our air quality for years to come.

Got something to say? Go for it!
